Singapore’s former Chief Justice Mr Yong Pung How passed away peacefully on 9 January 2020 at the age of 93.
Singapore Management University (SMU) was most privileged to have had Mr Yong Pung How as the University’s Pro-Chancellor (2008-2010) and Chancellor (2010-2015).
Mr Yong was a prominent lawyer, banker and Singapore’s former Chief Justice who made significant contributions to the impact and growth of legal education and research in Singapore’s local universities. In addition to his role as SMU’s Pro-Chancellor and subsequently Chancellor, he was also the founding Chairman of the School of Law Advisory Board. Through his sterling leadership and guidance, the School was able to reach each of its milestones successfully. His passion for the law was undisputed and his support towards legal education was a major encouragement during the time when the SMU law school was still in its infancy.
